Lindcove Research and Extension Center holds annual Citrus Display and Tasting on Dec. 14-15
LINDCOVE – The University of California citrus research center swings open its doors this week to give farmers and the public the opportunity to view and taste more than 100 varieties of citrus.
The 175-acre UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Lindcove Research and Extension Center (LREC) is situated where the Valley and Sierra Nevada foothills meet in eastern Tulare County. Research conducted at the center plays a major role in maintaining California’s position at the forefront of high-quality citrus production for whole fruit markets throughout the United States and the world. Scientists from around the state conduct research at the Lindcove facility to develop and evaluate new citrus varieties, improve citrus production, and protect citrus from pests and plant diseases. The results of their research are then shared with growers, homeowners, teacher and students.
On Friday, Dec. 14 growers are invited to participate in citrus fruit tasting and hear educational talks by researchers with the University of California, Riverside. The talks will open at 10 a.m. with a presentation on the Citrus Clonal Protection Program by Dr. Georgios Vidalakis. At 10:30 a.m., Dr. Tracy Kahn will discuss new citrus varieties during a tour of the demonstration orchard. At 11 a.m., Dr. Mikeal Roose and Claire Federici will lead a tour of the new lemon block.
On Saturday, Dec. 15, the general public is invited to see and taste more than 100 citrus varieties that are grown at Lindcove from 9 a.m. to noon. They can even take home a bag of fruit for just $10. Visitors can choose from Cara Caras, Navels, Mandarins, or assorted citrus from four bins located in front of the Conference Center. Citrus enthusiasts can also get answers to their questions about citrus horticulture and pest management at the Master Gardener booth
The Lindcove Research and Extension Center is at 22963 Carson Ave. in Exeter. The tasting takes place in the Conference Center building, located at the end of Carson Ave. on the right. For more information about this event contact Jasmin Del Toro at 559-592-2408 ext. 1151, or email@example.com
