Woodlake awards roundabout project work to bidders

Woodlake’s Sierra Ave. and Castle Rock St. roundabout project construction awarded to DOD Construction, construction management and resident engineer services awarded to SJ Construction Management

WOODLAKE – Adding to their already impressive collection of roundabouts, the city has decided on who’s going to get the job done when it comes to building the new roundabout at the Sierra Avenue and Castle Rock Street intersection.

Of the eight bids received for the construction of the Sierra Avenue and Castle Rock Street roundabout, the lowest bidder, DOD Construction LTD, was selected at the Oct. 11 city council meeting at $2.7 million. The highest bid was from Agee Construction at $3.1 million.

The city has also hired SJ Construction Management to provide resident engineer services and construction management to meet state and federal oversight guidelines. The city circulated requests for proposals for the project, but only received one proposal.

Woodlake community development director Jason Waters said the city has worked with both companies before. SJ Construction Management staff has previously worked on the Valencia Street and Naranjo Boulevard roundabout, downtown phases 1, 2 and 3 enhancement, North Valencia Street Improvements, Magnolia Street improvements, Woodlake Plaza and the North Valencia Extension Street Improvements Project.

The project has already received funding for its estimated $2.4 million price tag, to come from recently awarded Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation, as well as county Measure R sales tax funds.

The Sierra Avenue and Castle Rock Street intersection sits adjacent to Castle Rock Elementary and Castle Rock Park on the east side of town. The proposed project involves demolishing the current one-way stop intersection to construct a roundabout intersection with American Disabilities Act (ADA) parking, ADA ramps to the park and improving overall accessibility to the park with added sidewalks, lighting and parking along the street.
