Sushi Kuu in Visalia has been named the ‘Best Ramen House” in Central California by Yelp, 27th among their top 100

VISALIA – Yelp’s annual “Best of” lists often lead to major benefits for businesses and this year’s list is sure to draw even larger crowds to one Visalia sushi spot that has a reputation for packing the house.

Sushi Kuu on Main Street in Visalia was named the 27th-best ramen house and is the highest-ranked restaurant of its type in the Central Valley. Nearly all of the top-ranked ramen house restaurants on Yelp’s ‘Best of” list are located in San Diego, Los Angeles, or the Bay Area where the majority of California’s population resides.

Visalia isn’t known as a sushi spot. Being several hours from the coast, getting fresh sushi-grade fish is an expensive ordeal and Mexican restaurants and burger joints vastly outnumber sushi spots. But, for lovers of fresh, raw fish, Sushi Kuu has earned an excellent reputation for quality and cleanliness. What has really set Sushi Kuu apart from the competition is the ramen.

The restaurant has earned a 4.5-star rating on Yelp with 737 reviews at the time of writing. Hundreds of those reviews mention the high-quality ramen that rivals popular spots in San Francisco and Southern California.

“Can’t remember what roll I got but it was suggested by my waitress, and it was amazing,” wrote Yelper Alex W. from Spring, TX on March 22. “Went in right after they opened and they actually had a decent amount of people in there! I knew it was going to be good if they had that many people right after opening for the day. I also had the pork ramen and it was delicious!!”

The recent recognition by Yelp is sure to only exacerbate the business the restaurant is known for. In Yelp reviews, numerous people comment on how crowded the small spot can become.

“The best sushi restaurant in the Central Valley is not in Fresno or Clovis, but in Visalia,” Yelper Blue B. of Clovis wrote on Feb. 15. “Arrive early and jockey for a position at the usually crowded but unassuming sushi bar for premium cuts of sushi on perfectly balanced rice. The knife work here is miles ahead of the local competition and the chefs are clearly taking their cues from some of America’s premier sushi empires. This is an exceptional restaurant for this region.”

Among the biggest complaints about this spot is parking. It is located on a stretch of Main Street that transitions to two-way traffic and only provides parallel parking spaces within a few blocks. Diners who don’t want to walk a few blocks may have to circle for a while before a spot opens up. The closest parking garage is located at 300 Acequia Dr. which is about four blocks from Sushi Kuu.

Sushi Kuu is located at 509 E. Main St. and is open from 11:00 a.m. to 2: p.m. for lunch and 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for dinner Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. They are open until 9:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The restaurant is closed on Wednesdays and Sundays.
