The College of the Sequoias Music Department will present their annual Winter Concert at 7:30 pm, Thursday, Dec. 4 at the COS theatre. The featured artist will be jazz drummer Joe LaBarbera.
LaBarbera has enjoyed a musical career that has literally taken him all over the world with some of the finest names in jazz. Jazz great Bill Evans may have summed it up best when he said, "Joe is very dedicated to playing quality music and he's willing to make the concessions of dues toward that end."
Joe began his professional career with Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd. He's played with Chuck Mangione, Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Gary Burton and Art Pepper to name a few. Joe played in what turned out to be a landmark trio, led by Bill Evans, with Marc Johnson on bass. Joe currently leads his own quintet and is a sideman for some of Los Angeles' finest bands and musicians. He is also on the faculty at the California Institute for the Arts and the Bud Shank Workshop, and travels the country doing clinics and concerts at major universities.
Joe will be performing with the COS Thursday Night Band led by Bill Butts.
Price of the concert is $7 and includes a drum clinic at 3:30 p.m. in the COS band room. For more information call 730-3907.
