Wendy Slack, owner of "Teacher's Pet,"can verify that being a favorite kid in the classroom, has its advantages.
Her newly opened Visalia store specializes in educational resource supplies for parents and teachers.
"The really interesting and funny thing about the name of my store is, I was voted teacher's pet in the eighth grade. I resented it back then but realize that this quality has helped me to get where I am today," Slack said.
Slack, a Visalia elementary school teacher, was let go recently from her teaching position due to budgetary cutbacks. With a love for teaching, and the desire to keep her foot in the education field she often thought of opening her own small business. Unfortunately, the lack of cash funds necessary to start a business was an obstacle. With a little research and background work she visited the Visalia SCORE Chapter for guidance and direction.
