Exeter Union High School seniors Jaymi Gepner and Carolina Ruiz were selected out of 1,000 students from across the state to participate in the 2004 California All-state Honor bands. Monarch Band Director Kirk Clague said students take the initiative to compete for placement by sending a recording of themselves playing scales and a required solo.
"This is an extremely competitive band, very hard to get into," Clague said.
Judges sift through the audition pieces and choose the top 300 students to participate in the California Band Directors Association annual convention held Feb. 19-22 in Fresno. At the convention Gepner, a mallet percussionist and Ruiz, a clarinetist, will give a live audition for placement in the Concert band, Symphonic band, or Wind Symphony. Once the musicians are placed in their respective bands they will learn a series of musical pieces to be performed Feb. 22 at the Saroyan Theatre. Ruiz and Gepner have previously been chosen to participate in the prestigious band.
This year Ruiz has also been selected through audition to be a participant in the 2004 Northern California Band Association All-Northern California Honor Band. This honor band is a select group of musicians from California counties north of the Tehachipi Mountains.
