EUSD names Teacher of Quarter

By Nancy Gutierrez

Exeter Union School District named Wilson Middle School Teacher Heather Keran as their teacher of the quarter. Keran has been an educator for six and a half years.

"I chose the profession of teaching because I saw it as a creative outlet and a continued learning experience for both the students and myself," Keran said. "Education is ever changing and it's exciting to find new ways to keep children challenged and engaged."

EUSD board members believe Keran has a dedication to her students and honored her at the board meeting on March 23. Keran received a Golden Bell in appreciation of her hard work at Wilson.

Keran teaches students in the Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) program and coached an Odyssey of the Mind team from November to February. Odyssey of the Mind is a complex competition where students solve problems using a variety of mediums including science, drama and art. She said she is most proud of earning a master's degree in education with an emphasis in curriculum and instruction.

"My current interest in teaching is in the area of brain research," she said.

Keran's other joy is traveling. She had the opportunity to visit England in 2002 where she visited British museums, galleries and historical sites.
