McDaniel named Teacher of the Quarter

Kathy McDaniel was chosen as the Exeter Union School District Teacher of the Quarter.

McDaniel is a first-grade teacher at Lincoln Elementary School. She has been in education for 14 years.

McDaniel is an Exeter native and she said she is blessed and honored to be working with what she calls Exeter's most precious asset, its children.

"My philosophy about teaching is although the students' have pressing academic needs, there is so much more to being a successful teacher," she said. "I feel that we need to look at the success of the whole child; social, emotional, psychological and academic."

McDaniel credits her students and their parents for any success she has. She also acknowledges the staff at Lincoln who she said work as a team and have the students best interest at heart.

"I will only be a success if I have managed to build my students up to a place where they believe in themselves and their ability to be fine human beings," she said.

When McDaniel is not hard at work in her classroom she is busy doing crafts, scrapbooking and even gardening. She said traveling is her favorite thing to do in her free time. She recently visited New York City with fellow teacher Shivon Lavely. But she admits her most exciting trip was to Hawaii after Sept. 11.

"Our plane was detained for hours on the runway due to a suspicious substance which was thought to be anthrax," she said. "It wasn't, and a day later we did make it to Waikiki."

If all of these hobbies weren't enough McDaniel said she hopes to try her hand at stained glass.

It is this dedication to new experiences and hard-work that earned McDaniel the Teacher of the Quarter award.

"I work hard each day to be a positive influence on those I have come into contact with," she said. "I give credit for my success to the Lord. Whatever I do, if I commit it to Him, He always makes it a success."

McDaniel is the daughter of Goldie and Charles Hudspeth. She has one brother Ron and a sister Marybeth. Her 10-year-old son, Jordan, is a fourth-grader at Rocky Hill Elementary School.

McDaniel recieved a certificate, a golden apple award and a $200 stipend to use in her classroom.
