Washington to receive new gym

By Nancy Gutierrez

At the Lindsay Unified School District board meeting members approved a bid award for the Washington Elementary School Gym/ Multi-use building to the Forcum Mackey Construction Company.

Director of Maintenance and operations Del Corley said the cost for the building comes to less than 2.7 million. The blue prints for the Washington gym are the same as the blueprints for the new gym at Steve Garvey Junior High School but certain areas or features were cut to lower the cost of the gym. Instead of a stage the building will have a two-foot raised floor. The backstops will be portable instead of permanent, and the Washington gym will have an exposed ceiling.

The new gym at Washington will alleviate the space issue the school has with its current cafeteria. There are approximately four lunch shifts that must be organized in order for all of the students to eat lunch. Corley said the new gym could cut that down to two shifts.

The new gym will be located on the north side of the school near Hermosa Street. Corley said construction will begin in October. They Multi-use gym at Garvey should be done by Dec. 15.
