Students' awards add up at Math Super Bowl

By Mo Moore

For students from Wilson, Steve Garvey and Three Rivers Middle Schools, math isn't a four-letter word. While solving equations and measuring the volumes of figures may seem like a form of cruel and unusual punishment for some youth, these students took on the competition at the 34th Annual Tulare County Office of Education Math Super Bowl March 14 to bring home multiple awards and a piece of brainac glory.

The fast-paced, brain draining competition has participants solving multiple problems as a team and as individuals. Problems range from topics such as patterns, functions, interpreting charts and graphs, probability, number theory, discrete math, logic, statistics, algebra and geometry. Over 130 five-member teams from 37 schools participated at the event. The annual event is open to seventh and eighth grade students. For more information call 733-6606 or see www.tcoe.k12.ca.us/MathSuperBowl/index.htm.
