John J. Cairns seniors Madison Robinson and Jose Lemus Morales honored by service club at board meeting

LINDSAY – Two lucky students who exemplify the best Lindsay Unified strives for were selected as Kiwanis learners for the month of February. Kiwanis is dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time. Lindsay Kiwanis Club recognizes Lindsay Unified School District learners who are Thoughtful-Enthusiastic-Respectful-Responsible-Inclusive-Friendly-Inquisitive-Capable (TERRIFIC) and who serve their community (school and/or Lindsay).

Madison Robinson senior

Madison Robinson

Madison Robinson is a senior at John J. Cairns High School.  Robinson moved to Lindsay from Pennsylvania in May, 2017.  She enrolled in Cairns High School for its “credit recovery” program and will complete her graduation requirements at the end of March 2018.  J. J. Cairns offers an internship program, where learners hold positions in a workforce 12 hours per week.  Robinson is looking forward to a career in nursing.  She took the initiative to contact Kaweah Delta Hospital to apply for an internship with their organization.  At that time, Kaweah Delta did not have a contract with LUSD, which provided internships for high school learners.  Because of Robinson’s initial contact with the hospital, she and five of her classmates are interning in various departments.  Robinson works in the renal department.  At school, Robinson is a Teacher Assistant and role model for her peers.  She exemplifies all the characteristics of a TERRIFIC Learner!

Jose Lemus Morales senior

Jose Lemus Morales

Jose Lemus Morales is a senior at John J. Cairns High School.  As a junior at the comprehensive high school, Jose fell behind in credits and chose to attend Cairns High School to make up the credits he needed to graduate.  Morales is on track to graduate in June.  He decided to remain as a learner at J. J. Cairns because of the intern opportunities; he is an intern at the district’s maintenance department where he is gaining skills in many areas of maintenance.  He plans to enroll in a vocational certification program at either Porterville College or College of the Sequoias.  At school, Morales is a peer tutor and is a role model for his peers.  School staff and intern mentors respect Morales for all the qualities of a TERRIFIC Learner!

The Lindsay Kiwanis Club recognized Madison Robinson and Jose Lemus Morales as February’s TERRIFIC Learners at the Lindsay Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m.
