VISALIA – Visalia Unified School District will celebrate the opening of the new Visalia Charter Independent Study West campus at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 16.
The new campus, located at 649 S. County Center Drive, houses the ninth- and tenth-grade supervising teachers, along with math, English, biology and other elective courses. Starting in the fall, the online school and health science classes will also meet at Visalia Charter Independent Study (VCIS) West.
As an independent study program, VCIS provides a flexible, individualized academic path for students in grades nine through twelve, and offers dual enrollment with College of the Sequoias. The school has earned a six-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools & Colleges and the curriculum is University of California and NCAA approved for students on a four-year college path. Electives include performing arts, culinary, health and more.
“VCIS continues to grow, and having the former Brandman University building become available to VUSD was perfect timing,” noted Todd Oto, Ed.D., superintendent of VUSD. “We invested resources into remodeling as needed, and the students and staff are enjoying the additional staff and teaching space.”
