EXETER – A global pandemic couldn’t stop Exeter’s longest running tradition as Exeter Union High School senior Lauren McEwen was crowned Miss Exeter 2020.

Last Tuesday during the annual Miss Exeter Coronation at Faith Tabernacle Exeter Family Center, the five candidates came up one-by-one answering impromptu questions. They also gave a slideshow presentation highlighting places and businesses they like in Exeter. After a brief break following the presentations, McEwen was presented with her crown. Allison Paregien was crowned first runner up.

She will spend the next 7 months representing the community at events in Exeter and throughout the area during her reign. McEwen will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Exeter Chamber of Commerce. Her court will each receive gift packets with items donated by local merchants and businesses, as well as a lifetime of memories.

Each candidate was judged on the following items: A personal essay (500-750 words), a five- to 10-minute verbal presentation via Zoom, a 10-minute special presentation, using photos and slideshows, the sale of virtual raffle tickets for the chamber and participation and cooperation during the candidate process.

McEwen is an aspiring journalist that has been published in The Sun-Gazette. She also served as a reporter for the Exeter FFA Chapter. During the week, she can be found at Sequoia Hills Stables in Elderwood, where she rides English saddles in dressage and jumping courses. She also exercises and trains horses to be suitable for other riders. Academically, she is a three-year member of the California Scholarship Federation with a cumulative GPA of 4.1. With a plan to major in Agricultural Communications and minor in Spanish, she looks forward to returning to the valley after college to serve as a correspondent for a newspaper or online publication, and to be an advocate for agriculture.

“I am excited to serve on the Miss Exeter Court, as the experience will allow me to better understand Exeter’s needs, meet with new and familiar faces, and attend events that influence the fabric of this community,” McEwen said in her application essay.
