Arts Visalia revives Sequoia High School exhibit

Sequoia High School Exhibition that was shut down in 2020 is coming back for 2021

VISALIA – The pandemic practically brought everything to a halt, including the Arts Visalia 2020 annual show cases. But that is not the case this year.

Arts Visalia is reviving their Sequoia High School Exhibition. This is the fourth year they have hosted the exhibition showcasing the student talents. This is Sequoia High School art students’ best opportunity to show off their talent from the multiple classes instructed by Sarah Coker.

When the exhibit first began in 2017 the Sequoia High School art program had about 120 to 140 students, Coker stated then, “I have the most popular electives on campus and I say this humbly when I stat that students will fight to get into my classes.”

Coker is also in charge of the Art Club which provides an open platform for students to have a voice and choice of theme and media. Many of the students express the desire to become better artists and to learn new techniques by exploring their creativity and passion and have talked about how therapeutic art is to find calmness and overcome anger.

Sequoia High School offers a fresh start to students in an accepting and nonthreatening atmosphere, as well as success in earning a living through vocational and career preparation. This exhibition continues to offer collaboration with community members and students who feel misrepresented and suppressed in society.

And for anyone keen on supporting local artists and business, the Arts Visalia Holiday Show and Sale runs from Nov. 20 through Dec. 23 with an evening shopping opportunity on the first Friday in December, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Arts Visalia Visual Art Gallery and gift shop is open from Noon to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and is located at 214 East Oak Avenue in downtown Visalia. Arts Visalia is celebrating 25 years as Visalia’s premier center for the visual arts. With the support of many throughout the years, they have fervently carried on the founders’ vision of a permanent center for the visual arts where you can view and purchase art and participate in quality arts education classes.
