VISALIA – This Valentine’s Day, instead of chocolate or flowers, why not have a quartet from The Visalia Mighty Oak Chorus serenade your sweetheart?

“We are always looking for new and different ways to entertain the public,” Lee Smith with the Mighty Oak Chorus said.

Two barbershop quartets from the chorus will be available to provide a singing valentine. The groups are for rent between 15- and 30-minute blocks on Thursday, Feb., 14, between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The singing groups can visit businesses, schools and homes in and around Visalia, including Exeter and Woodlake. The cost is just $40, and the groups will sing two love songs, give the recipient a long stem rose and a box of chocolates.

“The people who use our services love it,” Lee Smith said.

In true barbershop style, including a red jacket, straw hat, and bow ties, the singers will present numbers from the 1940s–1960s songbook, and are open to suggestions.

Proceeds go to help with the chorus’ shows, uniforms and other expenses this year. The chorus raises between $800 and $1,000 annually.

“Even if it is not a big fundraiser, it gets people to hear our music and remember us,” Smith said.
