Police chase ends in suicide

A man suspected of assault with a deadly weapon killed himself following a short pursuit outside of Lindsay.

Isaac Chapa, 27, of Tulare was identified as a suspect in an assault with a deadly weapon at about 9:20 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 in Lindsay. During the investigation, officers observed Chapa drive by the crime scene. Circumstances surrounding the assault were not available as of press time.

Lindsay police officers followed the suspect and a short pursuit ensued. Chapa stopped the car near Road 200 north of Avenue 232 on the outskirts of Lindsay. Officers approached the vehicle and found the driver, Chapa, suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Medical personnel responded and transported Chapa to Sierra View District Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Office Violent Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation of the apparent suicide. Results of the investigation are pending an autopsy report. As of press time, no information on the autopsy was available.
