Four die in wreck near Strathmore

Four people were killed in an accident east of Strathmore on Sunday night.

All four were passengers in a vehicle that was involved in a collision that also sent the driver, also unidentified, and a deputy to the hospital.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Tulare County Sheriff's Deputy C. Kurkendahl was on patrol traveling westbound on Avenue 196 at about 55 mph approaching the intersection at Road 256, about three miles east of Strathmore.

At about 11 p.m., a 1987 Cadillac traveling southbound on Road 256 ran the stop sign and was broadsided by the SUV patrol vehicle. There are stop signs both north and southbound on Road 256 at the intersection. Traffic on Avenue 196 does not stop.

Kurkendahl applied the brakes but was unable to stop in time. All of the occupants in the Cadillac were ejected and killed at the scene. The driver of the Cadillac sustained major injuries and was transported to Sierra View District Hospital.

The names of the occupants were unknown as of press time. None of the occupants in the Cadillac were wearing seatbelts.

Kurkendahl sustained moderate injuries and was taken to Sierra View District Hospital.
