Exeter readies for Fall Festival

The Exeter Chamber of Commerce will host its 93rd annual Fall Festival and Art Affair Oct. 9-14.

The weeklong festivities kick off with the Miss Exeter Coronation Dinner at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9 at the Exeter Memorial Building, corner of Kaweah Avenue (Highway 65) and Sequoia Drive.

This year there are 11 Miss Exeter candidates vying for a personal development scholarship and the chance to represent their hometown until next year's festival. Candidates will be announced in next week's paper.

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, the Pumpkin Carving Contest will be held at 4:30 p.m. at Mixter Park at the corner of E and Pine streets in downtown Exeter. Prizes will be awarded for Spookiest and Most Original in the following age categories: 5 and under, 6-7 year olds, 8-9 year olds and 10-12 year olds. Children must provide their own pumpkin along with a plastic bag and newspaper to help clean up.

The pumpkin carving will be part of Family Fun Night, where downtown merchants will host a game in front of their businesses from 5-7 p.m.

On Thursday, Oct. 12, Bank of Sierra will host the Fall Festival Mixer honoring Miss Exeter and her Court from 5:30-7 p.m.

On Friday, Oct. 13, the Lip Sync Contest will be held at 5 p.m. at the gazebo in City Park, corner of E and Chestnut streets. First-place prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Male soloist, female soloist and group. Each category will be divided into age groups as follows: Kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade, seventh through eighth grade and high school. Songs may not be longer than three minutes. Only three of the same song will be allowed, so register early. Registration deadline is Oct. 12.

The festival culminates on Saturday, Oct. 14 beginning at 7 a.m. with a 10K run, 2-mile prediction walk and pancake breakfast.

The City of Exeter Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting registrations for the run/walk. Registration is $15 and can be done at the recreation office, 314 W. Firebaugh Ave. Only the first 75 entrants will receive a T-shirt. Participants may also sign up the morning of the race until 6:45 a.m.

Parks and Recreation Department is also accepting registration for the annual Horseshoe Tournament. A class starts at 8 a.m., B class at 10:30 a.m. and C class at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $15 and includes a free T-shirt. Only the first 24 players will be allowed into the tournament.

The Fall Festival Parade down Pine Street begins at 10 a.m. and live music at City Park begins at 11 a.m. Throughout the day, there will be arts, crafts and food and game booths at City Park.
