Lady Monarchs Crowned Tournament Champions

The Exeter Monarchs continue to stay hot. On Thursday, Sept. 20, the Monarchs took on San Joaquin Memorial in a non league matchup. Exeter had no trouble getting by the Panthers as the Monarchs win all three sets 25-15, 25-15 and 25-16. Melissa Vernon led the team with 10 kills while Breeann Sturges had seven kills. Jacque Hutcheson had six aces and 22 assists for the Monarchs.

On Friday, Sept. 21, the Monarchs headed west to Visalia to participate in the Redwood Tournament. In pool play the Monarchs defeated Kingsburg 25-20 and 29-27.

In the same day Exeter also took down Porterville 25-16 and 25-16. With the Monarchs 2-0 in pool play, that advanced them to play on Saturday, Sept. 22 in the double elimination bracket.

First off was Hanford, and Exeter had no trouble with the Bullpups as Exeter defeated Hanford 25-18 and 25-13. In the next game of the day Exeter took on league foe Kingsburg in a very tough match up.

The Monarchs would jump out early and pick up the 26-24 victory but the Vikings would answer right back with a 25-21 victory over the Monarchs. But in the end of this match it was Exeter who picked up the victory 15-12.

With just one game away from the championship game, the Monarchs had to take down the tournament host, the Redwood Rangers. The Rangers got the best of the Monarchs as Redwood defeated Exeter.

Exeter now entered the elimination game against Kingsburg with the winner moving on to the championship game to face Redwood. Unlike the first meeting with the Vikings, the Monarchs took care of Kingsburg 25-20 and 25-12 to set up the rematch with Redwood.

In the championship game the Rangers could not repeat the outcome of the first meeting against the Monarchs. Exeter would defeat the Rangers 25-16 and 25-23 to be crowned tournament champions.

Throughout the tournament Jacque Hutcheson had 14 aces, 75 digs and 126 assists. Cidney Atkins had 27 kills and 6 aces for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs improve to 15-2 on the season and will be back on the court on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. against Tulare Western.
