Monarchs run over Badgers

The Exeter Monarchs snap a two game losing skid by defeating the Yosemite Badgers 55-0 on Friday, Sept. 28 in Oakhurst.

Alex Cortez would start off the scoring when he broke free for a 43 yard touchdown run to give the Monarchs the 7-0 lead. Then, with just over six minutes to play in the first quarter Austin Cardoza would race to the end zone on a 72 yard touchdown run to make it 14-0 Monarchs.

The Monarchs got it done on both sides of the ball in the first quarter. With a little over three minutes left to play in the first quarter, Exeter’s Brendan Washington intercepted a pass from Yosemite’s Joey Woosley and returned it 42 yards for a Monarch touchdown making it 21-0.

With a 21 point lead after the first quarter the Monarchs would not show signs of slowing down. In fact, Exeter did the complete opposite by putting up more points in the second quarter than they did in the first quarter.

Trevor Weaver would get the scoring party going in the second quarter as he would find the end zone on a 14 yard touchdown run to extend Exeter’s lead 28-0. From there it became the Austin Cardoza show as Cardoza would score on a 1 yard run, 5 yard run, and a 2 yard run to break the game wide open at 49-0 heading into halftime.

Exeter would not see the end zone again until Joaquin Castilla would find his way in from 2 yards out in the fourth quarter to make it 55-0 with less than four minutes left to play in the game.

This was Exeter’s first shutout this season and the first shutout since 2010 when the Monarchs blanked Taft 44-0. The Monarch defense was stellar against the Badgers as Exeter only allowed 18 yards of rushing and 100 yards in the air.

As for Exeter’s offense, Cody Tilly and Adin Trujillo combined for 81 yards in the air. In most cases having your quarterback throwing for 81 yards is bad but when your running backs are running for 320 yards on the ground, most coaches will be ok with just 81 passing yards from their quarterback.

The running game was lead by Cardoza who had 125 yards on the ground in just 11 attempts. Next behind Cardoza was Joaquin Castilla who had 60 yards on the ground in 10 attempts.

Up next for Exeter is Selma in the first league game of the season. Exeter (3-3) will be traveling to Selma (2-3) to take on the Bears. Selma defeated Madera South last week 37-26 in their last tune up game before the start of league play. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5 in Selma.
