VISALIA – For the second time in as many months, a Visalia Unified School District student was arrested for threatening gun violence against a school. On Oct. 26, the Visalia Unified School District Administration was notified by the Visalia Police Department that an El Diamante High School student was taken into custody for threats of gun violence.

Visalia police officers interviewed other students who attend El Diamante High School prior to making the arrest. The student was not in attendance at school today as he was arrested at his residence last night.

District Office and site staff are working cooperatively with Visalia Police Department to assist with this investigation and to provide our complete support in every way possible. The District takes the most conservative approach and precautions when a report of this type occurs.

The safety and well-being of students and staff are the highest level priority of El Diamante High School and Visalia Unified School District.  Every VUSD school has established a safety plan which contributes to maintaining a safe learning environment for our students.  We will again be reviewing our plans and continuing our ongoing relationship with law enforcement to ensure we do everything we can to maintain the safety and security of El Diamante High School and all schools in our District.

“We are grateful to the Visalia Police Department for their rapid and professional response to this situation,” said Dr. Tamara Ravalín, assistant superintendent for the district.

This is the second time in as many months that a VUSD student has been arrested for threats of gun violence. On Sept. 18, Visalia Police officers arrested a Ridgeview Middle School student for making similar threats. The student, whose name was also not released because he is a juvenile, was not in school the day that officers arrested him at his home.

The district office said every VUSD school has established a safety plan which contributes to maintaining a safe learning environment for its students and staff.
