VISALIA – A new kind of hotel led a long list of commercial, industrial and residential building permits this month.

Hilton Hotels & Resorts is planning on bringing its latest concept to Visalia. The Home 2 Suites will be a four-story, 83 room hotel that is both is environment and pet friendly. The extended stay hotel allows customers to bring dogs and cats, as well as birds, bunnies, turtles, etc. The hotel also uses recycled products in their building materials, compact fluorescent bulbs in all fixtures and dual flush toilets in every room. Their pools are saline-based and they offer a unique combination of laundry room and gym for those who want to get a quick workout while waiting for the clean clothes. The nearest Home 2 Suites is in Hanford, though there are no current locations in Fresno or Bakersfield.

The hotel will be located in The Square, a 25-acre business research park just north of 198, at the corner of North Plaza Drive and West Crowley Avenue. This is the first development of the master planned business park approved in November 2014.

In addition to the hotel, the development will integreate 97,200 square feet of office space, 38,200 square feet of retail, gas station/convenience store, 11,250-square foot restaurant space, 23 townhome residential units, 28 executive lofts, 808 parking stalls, and a pedestrian trail along the edge of the site, all onto a single campus.

The campus will have contemporary and modern “English” style architecture, and will provide a basis for structures to be certified under the “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)” green building rating system.

Just around the corner from the new hotel a 7,172-square foot office building is being proposed just north of the Marriott Residence Inn currently being constructed in the Plaza Business Park. The project features two buildings, with one of the buildings consisting of nine offices and four classrooms, suggesting a school or training facility of some sort.

A little further north, local manufacturer Voltage Multipliers Inc. (VMI) is expanding at its main building and is proposing a 20,000-square foot phase two expansion that will make room for more capacity to grow. VMI currently operates a 34,000-square foot manufacturing area and a 10,000-square foot office area on Roosevelt Avenue west of Kelsey Street. The company manufactures voltage products such as diodes, multipliers and rectifiers which convert low to high voltages and regulate alternating voltages. A few exits away near Chinowth Street, Mitchell and Powell Law Firm is building a new 3,256-square foot office building at 4234 W. Mineral King Ave. Mitchell and Powell is a personal injury law firm currently located at 2208 W. Sunnyside Avenue, Suite A  in Visalia. The new office space looks to be similar to the existing office adjacent to the proposed building and will house the law office for local firm. Residential building has been building steam as well. Twenty-one new single-family housing starts in February, two new multifamily and one new commercial project added to a busy March. All in all, there were 301 new permits issued for the month with a total valuation of approximately $11.6 million.
