WOODLAKE – There’s a berry good reason to visit Woodlake this weekend.

On Saturday, May 25 the Woodlake Botanical Garden will play host to its annual Blueberry, Blackberry and Strawberry Tasting festival. The event is organized by Manuel Jimenez, Farm Advisor Emeritus for the University of California, Woodlake Pride Inc., the City of Woodlake, the University of California Cooperative Extension Tulare County, the U.C. Kearney Research and Extension Center and Driscoll’s Finest Berries.

The berry tasting will begin at 8 a.m. and end at noon at the botanical garden, 400 East Naranjo Blvd. in Woodlake. Participants will taste the best commercial and home garden blueberry, blackberry and strawberry varieties California has to offer. Participants will be encouraged to bring their children to taste blueberries directly from the plants in the gardens. The entry donation is $5 per person. Children S years old and younger enter free. The gardens are wheelchair accessible.

The Woodlake Botanical Garden was created by Woodlake Pride Inc. in collaboration with the City of Woodlake and with support from the University of California Cooperative Extension. Under the direction of Manuel and Olga Jimenez, hundreds of local youth have participated in planting and maintaining the gardens for more than 14 years. The facility includes beautiful rose gardens, a tropical garden, a stone fruit orchard, a citrus orchard and a large collection of edible fruits and nuts. Come early to tour the rose gardens and stay late to walk through the botanical gardens.

In addition to the sponsoring organizations several other groups will be providing educational information. They include the University of California Tulare/Kings County Master Gardeners, UC Kearney Agriculture Research and Extension Center, Natural Resource Conservation Service, California Rare Fruit Growers, Family Healthcare, Proteus Inc., Family Health Care Network and others.
