Road cyclists invited for social ride on Sunday

The first of many various types of social rides planned by Bicycle Werks owner will take road cyclists from downtown Visalia on a climb over Rocky Hill and back this weekend

VISALIA – On Sunday, July 28 road cyclists are invited to participate in Bikes, Burgers & Brews, a no competition, social ride, organized and hosted by Sierra Bicycle Werks. Various routes will be offered from 25 to 35 miles, but at an easy pace with no one left behind. The ride is meant to be for keeping in shape while social, and not competitive.

The ride, which starts at 8 a.m., will take cyclists up and over Rocky Hill. While water or other cold drinks are recommended kept with you on your bike, there will also fluids available at a gas station on route. Helmets are always required.

Sierra Bicycle Werks owner David Mendonca feels there is a real need to for community rides in the area. While this particular ride is geared for road cyclists, Mendonca envisions more rides, including family-oriented ones, around Visalia when the weather cools.

Sierra Bicycle Werks, located on E. Main St., has long been a fixture of the downtown Visalia area. With downtown extending to the east, into what has been known in the past as the antique alley section, is now becoming more of a modern pub and restaurant area, although some antiques remain. The cyclist store will be moving a few blocks down to that area within the next few months.

“Downtown is moving that way and so are we,” Mendonca said.

The ride begins and ends at the Stacked Bar & Grill, 531 E. Main St. in Visalia. Participants, or other cyclist not up to the length of the ride, are invited to socialize with a spot of lunch, a brew, and cycle-talk starting mid-morning to noon. There will be plenty of room on the back patio for bikes during the lunch break.
