VISALIA – Summertime means it is catfish derby time and on Saturday, July 27 kids will cast their lines into the water for the 7th Annual Summer Catfish Derby at Plaza Park Pond in Visalia. Held from 8 to 10 a.m., the purpose is not only to have a morning of fun and achievement, but to introduce children to wildlife

The City of Visalia Parks and Recreation Department expects it to be a sellout of the 200+ spaces, so potential entrants need to get their registrations in. Staff says there are just a few spots still left in each age category. Under the Department of Fish and Game, children are not required to have fishing licenses, as with adults, so entering is easy.

The event is open to children between the ages of 3 and 15 years. Entries are divided into two age groups: 3 to 7 and 8 to 15. Each entrant can bring one or two family members with them to the pond, however, the child is to be the one handling the fishing pole for casting and reeling in any fish. Winners are determined by the total stringer weights of the fish that they reel in. They are then encouraged to release the fish back into the pond.

But wait, there’s more. Raffle prizes, donated by Turner’s Outdoorsman, will be given away during the event and include tackle boxes, fishing poles and more. So, there is something for everyone to win!

Registration fee is $10 in advance. Room permitting, registration fee at the event will be $12. Visit to register online, or register in person at the Anthony Community Center (345 N. Jacob Street).

Participants need to bring their own fishing poles, bait, stringer and tackle. For more information, please call 559-713-4365.
