Arts Visalia to carry 9th edition of Baskets & Gourds

Arts Visalia presents “Baskets & Gourds: Containers of Our Culture IX” this April featuring over 20 artists’ handwoven basketry and gourd art

VISALIA — This April, Arts Visalia Visual Art Center is proud to present the ninth edition of “Baskets & Gourds: Containers of Our Culture,” featuring the intricate work of over 20 artists in the realms of handwoven basketry and both decorative and functional gourd art.

The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, April 5, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., inviting the public to immerse themselves in the diverse interpretations and techniques that connect these traditional art forms to contemporary expressions. An Artist Talk with Jennifer Malone, scheduled for Saturday, April 6, at 2 p.m., promises to provide deeper insights into the creative processes behind these unique pieces.

Additionally, those interested in hands-on experience can join a gourd art workshop on Saturday, April 20, from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Registration details are available on Arts Visalia’s website, The month-long exhibition will conclude with a closing reception on Friday, April 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Looking ahead to May, Arts Visalia will feature the works of Martin Azevedo and Kirk Cruz. Azevedo’s pieces delve into themes of symbolism, masculinity and allegory, while Cruz’s work is celebrated for its bold approach to color theory and light. The opening reception for this upcoming exhibition is slated for Friday, May 3, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In addition to its exhibition schedule, Arts Visalia continues to foster the creative talents of younger artists through its Youth Art Classes. With enrollment now open, these classes offer a valuable opportunity for children and teens to explore their creativity under the guidance of experienced instructors.
