MILITARY MISSIVES: Visalia’s own soars to junior sailor of the year

Visalia native Payton Sotelo named Junior Sailor of the Year serving with Navy Munitions Command

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Petty Officer 2nd Class Payton Sotelo, a native of Visalia, California was recently named Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) serving with Navy Munitions Command Detachment (NMC Det) located at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California. JSOY is an accolade given to an exemplary sailor, selected by a board of senior enlisted out of multiple competitive entries, for their accomplishments.

“I received Junior Sailor of the Year for Navy Munitions Command Lemoore for my performance working at the Material Delivery Unit as an Ordnance Truck Inspector and Quality Assurance/Safety Observer,” said Sotelo.

Sotelo, a 2016 graduate of Mount Whitney High School, joined the Navy seven years ago.

Today, Sotelo serves as an aviation ordnanceman responsible for storing, servicing, inspecting and handling all types of weapons and ammunition carried on Navy aircraft.

“Receiving this award is a humbling experience and I am grateful for the recognition of the work I have put in,” added Sotelo. “It gives me motivation to continue my career in the Navy and to help junior sailors reach the same position.”

NMC Det Lemoore maintains all ordnance in designated readiness and assembly configurations, through a program of periodic maintenance and provides assembly and final preparation services in support of Pacific Fleet operations.
