Visalia Police arrests juvenile in sports park shooting

17-year-old is arrested for shooting a woman during a confrontation with others at Riverway Sports Park

VISALIA – Visalia police officers were able to make an arrest in shooting at Riverway Sports Park last week.

At about 4 p.m. on Sept. 28, officers arrested a 17-year-old male juvenile outside his residence in the 1000 block of W. Riggin Ave. in connection with the Sept. 26 shooting. According to police, multiple people were gathered at the sports park after hours when a female victim was shot during a fight between several other individuals at 1:46 a.m. A witness drove the woman to Kaweah Health Medical Center where she was treated for the gunshot wound and stabilized.

After finding a shell casing at the scene, and conducting numerous interviews and follow up investigations, the Visalia Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit was able to identify a suspect and obtain an arrest warrant for attempted homicide.

Sunday, Oct. 3

At 10:31 p.m. the Visalia Police Department received a report of a robbery which had just occurred with possible shots fired at Visalia Liquor located at 2407 W. Whitendale Ave. Officers arrived on scene and located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound in the 2400 block of W. Monte Vista Ave. The investigation revealed that two subjects armed with firearms entered the business, demanded money and fled. While leaving the scene the suspects fired on an uninvolved subject, striking him. That victim was transported to Kaweah Health Medical Center where he was treated for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The suspects in this case remain outstanding. Also on Oct. 4 was the Visalia Police Department’s arrest of Erin Homan, 5, after being interviewed for her role in possibly stealing about $60,000 from the Marriott Hotel and its guests. In February 2021, the department received a report of a possible embezzlement involving an employee of the Marriott Hotel. Detectives learned in 2019, an employee scheduling private parties for the hotel, took cash deposits from guests, and then kept the money for herself. The employee would then create fake receipts to cover the theft. Hotel staff was made aware of the thefts several months later and contacted law enforcement. Homan was booked into the Tulare County Pre-Trial Facility for embezzlement.

Monday, Sept. 27

At approximately 10:40 p.m. officers with the Visalia Police Department developed information that the final suspect wanted in connection with a Sept. 7 homicide, Freddy Balderas, 35, was at a residence in the 200 block of west Grove. Detectives with the violent crimes unit, special enforcement unit, narcotics unit, and officers from the patrol division set-up surveillance on the location. Balderas was contacted outside the residence and was taken into custody without incident. A search warrant was written for the residence and a firearm was located. It is not known at this time if it was the firearm used in the homicide. Balderas was booked at the Tulare County Pre-Trial Facility on homicide and conspiracy charges. It is not believed that there are any further suspects outstanding in this investigation. Visalia police arrested three other suspects in this case: Derek Williams , 35, Elissa Navarro, 31 and Patrick Munoz, 40. They are alleged to have been involved in the killing of Dominic Harris, 38 on Sept. 7 at 9:16 p.m. in the 2500 Block of W. Hemlock. Harris died at Kaweah Health Medical Center.
