The killing transpired following a domestic altercation that turned fatal, officials said March 14. The incident, which took place on May 12, 2021, occurred in the kitchen of their Visalia home, and escalated when Basra stabbed the victim while her two children were having breakfast.

Following the attack, one of the children sought help from a neighboring residence. The victim was later pronounced dead at Kaweah Delta Medical Center.

Basra, who admitted to losing control during the altercation, entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder involving a knife and no contest to charges of child endangerment on Feb. 9, 2024. Under California law, he is required to serve a minimum of 20 years before eligibility for parole consideration.

Supervising Deputy District Attorney Laura Jackson led the prosecution of the case.
