Visalia officers respond to car, motorcycle crash

Motorcyclist succumbs to injuries following vehicle collision on Coppola Avenue, Demaree Street intersection

VISALIA – Following a vehicle-versus-motorcycle collision on Coppola Avenue, a man has been pronounced dead despite life-saving efforts.

At 5:32 p.m. on April 25, Visalia Police Department officers responded to an incident on Demaree Street and Coppola Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision. Officers learned a vehicle traveling Southbound was making an Eastbound turn on to Coppola Avenue from Demaree Street, when it was struck by a motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle was immediately transported to Kaweah Health, where despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced deceased.

The VPD Traffic Unit has taken over the investigation into this collision. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.

At 2 p.m., Christopher Sweeney, 33, was apprehended by the Visalia Police Department SWAT team at a residence in the 300 block of South Summit Street. According to reports, Sweeney was wanted on four warrants amounting to $2 million, including charges related to narcotics and weapons.

The Visalia Police Department Narcotics Unit and Special Enforcement Unit have been actively investigating Sweeney for the past two months. The VPD SWAT team was deployed to assist in apprehending him given the seriousness of the warrants. He was arrested without any injuries to officers or the suspect.
