Intersection crash leads to DUI arrest

Minor injuries reported after collision between a Honda and Porterville police car at Avenue 208, Road 168 intersection

TULARE COUNTY – A collision involving a Honda Accord and Porterville police patrol vehicle recently occurred at an intersection in the southern part of the county, leading to minor injuries and a DUI arrest.

On June 6 at approximately 5:35 p.m., the Fresno Communication Center received a call of a two vehicle crash in the area of Avenue 208 and Road 168. Officers from the California Highway Patrol Porterville Area Office responded to the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates a man identified as Eriberto Avila was driving a 1991 Honda Accord northbound on Road 168, approaching Avenue 208. Another driver, identified as Robert Richardson, was driving a 2019 Dodge Charger Porterville Police Department patrol vehicle eastbound on Avenue 208, approaching Road 168.

Avila failed to stop for the posted stop sign that controlled northbound traffic on Road 168 at the intersection with Avenue 208. As a result, Avila drove the Honda into the direct path of the Dodge and both vehicles collided. After the crash, the Honda came to rest in a dirt field, on the southeast corner of the intersection of Road 168 and Avenue 208. The Dodge came to rest on its wheels facing in an easterly direction blocking the eastbound and westbound lanes of Avenue 208.

Avila fled the scene of the crash on foot and was later apprehended. He was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested. Both Avila and Richardson sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash and were treated at Sierra View Medical Center.
