A Celebration of Life service was held on Nov. 8 for Steven Mark Terry, 39, of Visalia. He passed away on Nov. 2 at the University Medical Center in Fresno.
He was born in Visalia on Oct. 27, 1964. He attended Sunnyside Elementary School in Strathmore and moved to St. Paul's School in Visalia in fifth grade. He attended Green Acres Junior High and graduated from Redwood High School in 1983. He was on the Redwood Ranger football and swim teams. He was a wonderful athlete, and he excelled at most sports he tried.
He had a great personality and a quick wit. He had a way of always finding something humorous in the most serious situation.
After high school he attended COS, Fresno City College and Fresno State. He was undecided about what he wanted to do, so he moved back to Visalia to work on the family ranch. He worked on the ranch for about three years and then decided it was time to return to school. He entered the COS nursing program and in no time at all, it was obvious he had found his calling. He received his R.N. degree in 1995, and finished his bachelor's degree in 2002, from the University of Phoenix. He spent time working at Kaweah Delta Hospital on 3 South, where he worked approximately seven months and then went to work at the Visalia Medical Clinic in the oncology field. He worked for Dr. Havard and Dr. Hsu for approximately five years and had spent the last two years working for Dr. Bryson at the clinic. He had such a gift of compassion and humor with his patients. He truly loved all the lessons of life and wisdom he learned from them.
He enjoyed cycling, swimming and surfing. He was an avid gardener and could spend hours outside working in the yard until everything was just right. People always commented on his beautiful gardens. He endured his camping trips up to Kings Canyon with his in-laws, nephews and family with a smile on his face. He was also a member of the American Cancer Society. He recently participated in the Tour of Hope bicycle ride with Lance Armstrong to raise money for cancer research.
He married his wife, Cindy Raynor in 1986. They have four wonderful children. The children were the most important part of his life. He was a patient and devoted father. He always looked forward to the soccer and baseball games and swim meets. He helped out in any way he could with their activities.
Survivors include his parents, Russell and Marie (Scarbrough) Terry of East Port, Maine; his wife, Cindy (Raynor); his four children, Trent 8, Jack 6, Sophie 3, and Reid 11 months; his in-laws, Jack and Joan Raynor of Visalia; his brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Stephanie Contreras and their boys of Exeter.
In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been set up for the children at any branch of Visalia Community Bank.
