Mass was held on Jan. 13 for Elena Vargas Garcia, 73, of Farmersville at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Exeter with burial following at the Exeter District Cemetery. She died on Jan. 7.
She was born on Jan. 24, 1930 to Jose T. and Gudelia (Ramirez) Vargas in Villagran, Tamaulipas, Mexico. As a small child she moved to Texas with her family. She met and married Santos Garcia and the couple made their home in Texas prior to moving the family to Exeter in 1961. She worked on different farms in the area. She was an excellent cook and loved to share her cooking with family and friends. She was well known for delicious homemade tamales. She was a loving mother, proud grandmother, and devoted sister, who was loved and will be missed.
Survivors include her mother, Gudelia R. Vargas of Exeter; sons, Pablo Garcia and his wife, Maria Olga of Lamont and Miguel Garcia and his wife, Elizabeth of Farmersville; two brothers, Ignacio Vargas and his wife, Raquel of Richmond and Roberto Vargas of Exeter; two sisters, Petra Ortiz of Blue Town, Texas and Maria Enriquez and her husband, Porfirio of Farmersville; four grandchildren, Pablo Garcia, Jr. and his wife, Roxanne of Bakersfield, Racquel Jiu and her husband, Pierson of Lamont, Catherine and Miguel Garcia, Jr. both of Farmersville; three great-grandchildren, Marisa, Noah and Aaron Garcia all of Bakersfield; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Santos, in 1985; two sons, Hector and Ruben; brother, Jose S. Vargas, Sr.; sister, Leandra V. Salazar; grandsons, Gabriel Garcia and twins, Andy and Jaime Garcia.
Arrangements are under the direction of Evans-Miller Exeter, Chapel.
