A Memorial Service for James Edgerly Miller III, 57, was held at Stephens & Bean Chapel of Fresno on Nov. 7. He died on Nov. 4.

Jim was born on Sep. 3, 1947, in Berkeley, Calif. to Loretta and James Miller, OD. He was the second of their 10 children, and moved to Exeter in 1949. From his earliest years, it was evident he was destined to be special. In high school, in Exeter from 1961 to 1965, he excelled in track, setting a school record in high jump which he held for many years. He joined the U.S. Army in 1967, and took on the most challenging tasks. He became a Green Beret medic. One of the feats he accomplished was HALO (high altitude, low opening) parachuting. After returning to civilian life, he married Linda Johnson and got his degree from California State University, Long Beach. Several years and four boys later, he moved to Fresno and became a RN by using his medic training to successfully challenge the RN board exam. Eventually he specialized in labor and delivery, where he touched many families with his gentle hands and powerful manner. While still an active RN, he attended San Joaquin School of Law, and was beginning his third year when he was diagnosed with cancer. He was told it would take him in three months. He beat it for two years, with miraculous help from his Savior who allowed him to be here for the marriage of two sons and the arrival of his first three granddaughters. He excelled at practically everything he did, but what he enjoyed the most was being a father/husband, and a devout Christian.

He became the spiritual guide for his huge immediate family: seven brothers, Thom and wife Kelly of Fresno, Larry and wife Susan of Los Altos, Dwight and wife Barbara of Caruthers, Terry and wife Laurie of Anaheim, Gordon of Riverside and Joe of Sherman Oaks; two sisters, Joyce and husband Chuck Aston of Fresno, and Rosemary and Mark Hellwig of Exeter; their 30 children and eight grandchildren; many nephews and nieces, plus a large extended family.

He is survived by his mother, Loretta; his beloved wife, Linda; son, Scott and his wife Natalie and their two daughters Milla and Matlyn; son Brian and his wife Kimiko and their daughter Isabella; and sons Mark and Jay. A.
