Funeral services for Dorothy May Shoemaker, 71, of Exeter were held on Nov. 16 at Evans-Miller Exeter Chapel followed by graveside services at Exeter Cemetery. She died after a lengthy illness on Nov. 10 in Exeter.

She was born on Aug. 2, 1933 in Hanford, Calif. In 1936, her family relocated to Visalia where she attended Washington, Jefferson, and Sierra Vista schools. While attending Visalia high School, her family moved back to Kings County and she graduated from Hanford High School in 1951.

After graduating, Dorothy was employed in Hanford by the Southern California Edison Company. On Sept. 11, 1953 she married Kenneth Shoemaker of Harlan, Ken. Kenneth attended College of the Sequoias and she continued to work. The family relocated to Kentucky in 1956 where Kenneth completed his education and taught school while Dorothy continued her career as a bookkeeper. The couple had two children.

In 1965, she and her family returned to California where Kenneth taught school in Woodlake and she maintained their home. The family moved to Exeter in 1971 when they become the pastors of the Exeter Pentecostal Church of God for several years. She taught Sunday school and coordinated church activities while maintaining their home. She and Kenneth were both members of the Ivanhoe Family Worship Center.

She was a dedicated Christian, a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Dorothy's life truly reflected Matthew 5:16, "… Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven."

She was preceded in death by her parents, Morgan M. and Katherine E. Edwards and her husband, Kenneth of Exeter. She is survived by a daughter, Karen Cosio of Visalia; a son, Steven Shoemaker of Visalia; grandchildren Crystal VanderTuig of Tulare, Melanie Cosio, Joyce Shoemaker, Karen and Kelly McPhetridge all of Visalia, Amanda and Michael Shoemaker of Hanford; a great-granddaughter, Amethyst Hamid; brothers Leland Edwards and wife Eula of Bakersfield, Donald R. Edwards and wife Jackie of Arcata and Leonard Edwards and wife Kate of Ukiah; numerous nieces and one nephew.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dorothy's name to Hospice of Tulare County, 900 W. Oak Ave. in Visalia, CA 93291. Arrangements were under the direction of Evans-Miller Exeter Chapel.
