Services for Katherine M. "Torchy" Dungan, 83, of Exeter, will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 17 at the Smith Family Chapel in Exeter. She died on Dec. 7 at Kaweah Delta Hospital in Visalia.

She was born on April 25, 1921 to Dorothy Alvis. Her mother had to follow her job on occasion, which meant the young Katherine, had the difficulty of moving from school to school. However, the majority of her schooling was in Exeter's elementary and high schools. She always loved to see the water tower in Exeter when they would return, she stated she knew she was home. She was a vibrant student who participated in many activities, one of which was being a cheerleader at Exeter Union High School with her friend Joetta. She also attended the College of the Sequoias.

She married James Toner Dungan (known to his friends and family as "Jimmy"). They married in Virginia City, Nev. on Feb. 5, 1942. They honeymooned at Coronado Island in San Diego where Jimmy was stationed as a navy pilot. In 1945 they had a son, Gary Lyndon Dungan, and in 1947 a daughter, Vicki Lynn Dungan. Torchy and Jimmy enjoyed raising their family and spending time with their friends of which they had many in their hometown of Exeter.

She lived her life with gusto and had more energy than people much younger than she. "Torchy" could kick up her heels and dance with the best of them. She always said you were never too old to try anything. It was only in the last month she conceded that she might have health problems that could slow her down. She was a member of The Lifestyles Center in Visalia for the past 14 years and exercised three days a week. She was an extraordinary woman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Toner Dungan in 1997; and her son, Gary Lyndon Dungan in 1999. She is survived by her daughter, Vicki Lynn Dungan.

Many thanks to family and friends for their support during this time. Donations may be made to your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.smithfam
