Helen Dorothy Ahrens Wobermin

Helen Dorothy Ahrens Wobermin, 87, of Los Osos, died March 18, 2005. She had been a resident of Bayside Care Center in Morro Bay for the past year. She will be buried next to her husband, Arthur Elbert Wobermin, at Rose Hills Cemetery in Whittier, Calif.

Helen was born Nov. 28, 1917 in Makawao, Maui. She was the granddaughter of Helen Aimoku Saffery Tripp and George Kaipuaina Tripp. She is one of the descendants of King Kamehamaha the First.

She received her bachelor of arts and nursing degrees from Stanford University. After her husband died in 1952, she with her daughter and son moved from Victorville to Exeter. Helen was the school nurse at Lincoln School, Wilson School and Exeter Union High School during the 1950s. She helped underprivileged school children by finding donations of school clothes, eyeglasses and dental care through the Kawanis Club and the Lions Club. At times she personally paid for them. When there was food left over at the school cafeterias, she delivered the food to the homes of poor school children. She organized and ran the annual vaccinations and polio vaccinations.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, one sister, Elsie G. Richards, and two brothers, Charles Augusts Ahrens and Edward Swift Ahrens who died at Guadalcanal during World War II.

She is survived by one daughter, Elberta C. Kerr of Los Osos, Calif.; and one son, Stanley Kliche Wobermin, also of Los Osos; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one niece, Teresa Richards Dashiell of Darrington, Wash.; and one nephew, William Henry Richards of Clovis, Calif.
