Helen Vaughn, an early Lindsay resident, died at her home in The Villages in San Jose, Calif. on March 4, 2005 at age 98. Born in Portland, Ore. in 1906, she moved to California in 1922. She attended UC Berkeley, San Jose State, and graduated from Fresno State.

Helen and her husband, Marvin Vaughn, who was a manager of the Sunkist Exchange, moved to Lindsay after they married in 1931; here they raised their family. Helen taught at the Washington Elementary School in Lindsay for 12 years. After their move to San Jose, Helen taught in the San Jose Alum Rock District both as an elementary teacher and as a reading specialist. At age 98, Helen was still in close touch with some of her past students from both Lindsay and San Jose.

Helen enjoyed traveling and was active in her community. She was a member of Retired Teachers Assoc., Daughters of the American Revolution, Eastern Star, Republican Women, PEO, AAUW, the Villages Medical Auxiliary, St. Philips Episcopal Church and the Villages Chapel.

Helen was preceded in death in 1989 by Marvin, her husband of 57 years. She is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Eloise and Charles Bodine of Los Altos and Marylin and Lewis Jacobsen of Riverside. Her six grandchildren, their spouses, and her nine great-grandchildren are Sharon and Craig North, Cassidy and Lydia of Yankee Hill; Catherine Bodine of Los Altos; Tricia and Kurt Urrutia, Hannah and Melissa of Campbell; Richard and Yolanda Bodine, Kellen and Ryan of Grass Valley; John Bodine of Mountain View; and Gretchen and Brian Wickes, Cameron, Camille and Nicolette of San Antonio, Texas and niece Gloria Felprop of Blue Jay, Calif.

Friends are invited to attend the memorial celebration of Helen's life, which will be held on April 3, at 2 p.m., at Cribari Auditorium at The Villages, 2000 Villages Parkway, San Jose.
