Morey was born Jan. 23, 1928, to Herbert Morey Coles Sr. and Anne Stevenson Coles in Sacramento, Calif. Following graduation from Vacaville High School, where he participated in sports and band, Morey joined the Army. He served on the East Coast, in Puerto Rico, at the Panama Canal and at Camp Roberts.

While enrolled at San Jose State, Morey met Dorothy Leask and they were married on June 21, 1952. Morey's first teaching and coaching position was at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp.

He moved his young family in 1958 to Lindsay where he taught history and coached a team of fine young men to a Central Sierra League basketball championship in 1959. After Tulare Western High School was completed, he taught and coached various teams until his retirement in 1986.

Morey, Dorothy and their family were devoted members of St. James Episcopal Church where he served as a Lay Reader, Junior and Senior Warden, and in many other positions of support for the congregation. For many years Morey enjoyed his membership in the Lindsay Lions Club, especially working with area youth for the annual Lions Speech Contest. He played for and coached several adult and youth baseball programs and served as a leader for Boy Scout Troop 154. Morey loved the mountains and hiking with a good book in his pack.

In later years, the music, humor, and fellowship he found playing the trumpet with the Occasional Brass gave him great pleasure. Morey was very much a family man and proud of the goals and accomplishments of his children, their spouses and their children. His family and many friends admired and have been influenced by the strength, humor and courage he has shown throughout the four years of his illness.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy, and his four children and their spouses: Chris and Ellen Coles of Alameda, Calif.; Barbara and Paul Brooks of Briones, Calif.; David and Kelli Coles of Lindsay; and Sara and Rick Brown of Fresno. He is also survived by his grandchildren: David S. and Sarah Coles, James Coles, Jared, Rachel, Wesley, and Jesse Coles, Rowan and Reese Brooks, and Scott Brown.
