Graveside services for Verna Mae Scroggin, 85, of Exeter were held on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Exeter Cemetery. She passed away on Dec. 3, 2005. She was born in Roanoke, Va. to George and Julia Reed on Aug. 31, 1920. She was the oldest of 13 children. Verna married James Dewey Scroggin April 5, 1947 in Virginia, and they came to Exeter-Farmersville area in 1963. She worked as a waitress at the Kaweah Chuck Wagon in Exeter, 20 years. Her husband, Jimmy, passed away Feb. 5, 2001.

Survivors include her son James Scroggin Jr. of Arizona and daughter, Linda Duke of Tulare; siblings, Helma Cronk of Florida, Randolph Reed, Helen Arnold, Carolyn Cartwright, Ruth Gail Lynch and Wayne Reed, all of Virginia; three grandchildren, Tammy Harlien, Shane Scroggin and Christie Barriga; eight great-grandchildren, Michael Young, Jacquelynn Harlien, Madison Scroggin, Richard Barriga, Tommi Harlien, Amber Ruiz, Kimber Bruno and Breia Duke; also numerous nieces and nephews.
