Nila was born in Huron, S.D. on June 20, 1934. She passed away Jan. 11, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Pickard; her parents, William and Hazel Specht; and her brother, Eugene Ryan of Washington. She is survived by her children; Ron Askins of Bakersfield, Angie Ruiz and husband Larry of Visalia, Jeff Askins and wife JoAnne of Pine Flat Lake. She was grandmother of six and great-grandmother of 12.

Nila migrated with her parents to Lindsay, Calif. as a young girl and grew up and graduated from Lindsay High School. She worked and lived as a bookkeeper in Lindsay for 30 years before moving to Camp Nelson, Calif. While she lived in Lindsay, she was active in the church choir, Jobs Daughters, an advisor for the 4H Club, the Lewis Creekers Dance Club, and an active supporter of her kids' activities. She also taught piano lessons after work.

In Camp Nelson she worked as a waitress, store clerk, and house cleaner. She played piano for the church and was a member of the Camp Nelson Women's Club. She was also an accomplished seamstress making clothes and doing alterations for family and friends.

A memorial service was held at the First United Presbyterian Church of Lindsay on Jan. 17. 2006. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.
