How do we know if there’s a God, and how can we get to know more about Him? I believe there are three trustworthy sources of information to help us: Creation (Nature), the Bible (the written Word of God), and Jesus Christ (the Living Word of God).
First of all, God has given us evidence of His existence through what He has made. His handiwork can be seen in the creation of the world and universe around us. If you saw the PBS special about the Hubble telescope, launched over 25 years ago, you were given a glimpse of how vast and incredibly beautiful the universe is about us.
Psalm 19:1 says that, “The heavens tell of the glory of God. The skies display His marvelous craftsmanship. Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known. They speak without a sound or word; their voice is silent in the skies; yet their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to all the world.” Romans 1:19 adds, “From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky, and all that God made. They can clearly see His invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature. So that they are without excuse whatsoever for not knowing God.”
The second way God has revealed Himself is through His Word, the Bible. It has one central theme: God’s redemption of mankind. The Bible helps us to make sense of the world which God has made, including the suffering and the evil. It also helps us to better understand ourselves and our need of a Savior. In it we discover God’s plan and purpose for our lives. He wants us to know Him and to experience the love, joy and peace that only He can give. He wants us to experience the forgiveness of our sins so that our broken relationship with Him can be restored.
The final way in which God made Himself known was through Jesus Christ, the “living Word” of God. In the Bible we read, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God.” It goes on to say, “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth,” (John 1:1,14). Christmas is when we especially remember and celebrate His coming to this earth. The angel who announced Jesus’ birth to the shepherds proclaimed, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” He lived among us, and showed us what God was like, but He also died on the Cross for our sins, paying the penalty we owed. That was why He came! He now offers us a gift: eternal life to those who will believe who He is and what He did for them on the Cross. “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord,” (Romans 6:23). Why not receive His gift to you this Christmas season? If you do you’ll find that you will truly come to know God!
