Five Monarchs place at Gilroy tourney

The Exeter Monarchs wrestling team finished eighth in the Mid-Cal Invitational in Gilroy over the weekend, their highest finish in recent years at the 46, team tourney.

Five Exeter wrestlers place in the tournament; Oscar Botello, Matt Gonzales, Dan Weatherly, Jason Timblin and Anthony Torres.

Botello (33-6), who was pinned in the quarterfinals by Callan Romesberg from Gilroy, rebounded and defeated him in the consolation finals. Botello pinned him in four minutes and 30 seconds. Botello also pinned an opponent from Hollister and registered point victories over opponents from Terra Nova, Edison and Liberty.

"We are definitely moving in a positive direction," Exeter coach Joe Connley said. "We are winding down the season and the kids are improving instead of just coasting."

Gonzales (22-6) turned in an impressive performance with five pins and a third-place finish in the 137-pound division. His only loss came to Eric Brooks from Shasta High School, when he was pinned in 5:25. Three of Gonzales' five pins came in under a minute in his best performance of the season.

"Matt is starting to wrestle to his potential," Connley said.

Weatherly (32-7) also had a third-place finish with his performance in the 130-pound division. Weatherly's only loss came to an Edison opponent who edged him 7-6. Weatherly had a pin and scores of 10-0, 15-0, 5-0 and 7-0 on his way to the consolation championship.

Surprising even his coach, Timblin (20-5) a sophomore, had a breakout tournament in the 142-pound division, finishing fifth place. He had three pins in his seven matches. Timblin lost a 7-2 and a 12-3 decision in the tournament.

Also with a fifth place finish was Torres (27-12) who had two major decisions, two technical falls and one fall.
