Exeter season ends in blowout loss

A series of plays in the third quarter of Wednesday's Division III playoff game in Hanford can sum up the entire 32 minutes of the contest for the Exeter Monarchs who lost 69-47.

Midway into the period as Hanford stretched their 37-25 halftime lead, the No. 7 seed Bullpups had six offensive rebounds in a three possession span. In each case they scored, and by the end of the third quarter the lead was expanded to 53-36.

"Lack of rebounding will kill you every time," Exeter assistant coach Oren Hartley said. "They weren't even taking good shots it's just every time they shot they had two girls underneath the basket waiting for the ball."

Exeter's only offensive surge came late in the first half. Trailing 36-17 they were able to get easy buckets off perimeter screens. By halftime the lead was reduced to 12, and that was as close as Exeter would get.

"A loss is a los, but we worked so hard and this is tough to go through," said senior Lindsey Turner after the game.

"It's over, there is no more hanging out with teammates, no more practices and no more games."

Playing in their final game for Exeter cousins Lindsey Turner and Whitney Turner combined for 14 points. Whitney was proud of the team despite the outcome of the game.

"We had an awesome group of girls this year, I wouldn't have picked another team to play with this year," Whitney Turner said. "Hanford is a good team, we just went out there and did our best."

While Exeter will be losing four players to graduation the future looks promising with Tiffany Marinos and Amanda Morgan among the returnees.

Jody Williamson had 14 points in the loss and Tiffany Marinos had seven points.
