Pettyjohn makes opening day start

A five-run second inning proved to be the difference in an opening night 8-4 win for the Salt Lake Stingers over the Fresno Grizzlies on April 8. Former Exeter Monarch and Fresno State Bulldog Adam Pettyjohn suffered the loss for the Grizzlies lasting just four innings.

In the disastrous second inning Salt Lake catcher Wilbert Nieves hit the first pitch out of the park and later in the frame, second baseman Brian Specht added an RBI double. But the big hit of the inning was a three-run homer by first baseman Rob Quinlan.

Aside from the breakdown in the second inning, Pettyjohn was able to pitch out of jams despite the rust of the early season being present.

Fresno responded with three runs in the top of the third. Shortstop Jamie Athas, in his first-ever Triple-A game delivered a two-run double. The other run came on a single by designated hitter Damon Minor.

The Grizzlies added another run in the fifth inning on a ground out by right fielder Todd Linden.

Salt Lake added another run in the sixth inning on a single by right fielder Brian Gordon and two more in the eighth on a double by designated hitter by Gary Johnson.

Steve Green earned the win for the Stingers by pitching five innings and striking out three.

The Grizzlies dropped the remaining two games in the series 6-5 and 5-4. The Grizzlies home opener will be on April 16.
