Cordeiro shoots 81 to pace Monarchs in landslide victory

By Tom Price Jr.

The Exeter Monarchs golf team completed its second consecutive perfect league season on May 4 by shooting 418 at the East Sequoia League Championships at the Kings Country Club.

Three of the six medalists were Exeter golfers, with Cory Cordeiro leading the way for the Monarchs with a second place 81, five strokes behind Lindsay's Javier Loya.

Steven Thompson was just one stroke behind Cordeiro with a fourth place 82 and Alex Garcia shot an 83 for a fifth place finish. Clayde Barkley was just off the pace with an 84 and David McKinney shot an 88.

Exeter's remarkable season began with a team minus its top two golfers from a year ago. Through the season, Cordeiro, Thompson and Garcia traded the top spot numerous times and the other three golfers consistently shot in the 80s and low 90s.

With Exeter and Woodlake finishing atop the ESL, they qualified for the Central Area Tournament held May 11 at Valley Oaks Golf Course in Visalia.

Along with those two teams the next 10 low scores from the ESL tourney advanced to the Area Tournament. They are: Javier Loya (Lindsay), Andrew Mendoza (Lindsay), Sam Gonzalez (Orosi), Ernie Lua (Orosi), Craig Lowrey (Dinuba), Michael Gurrola (Lindsay), Chad Lundsford (Dinuba), Mat Todd (Dinuba), Ryan Devaney (Corcoran) and Daniel Moreno (Orosi).

As of press time the tournament had yet to be played and results can be found in the April 19 issue of The Exeter Sun.
