Monarchs reign in Visalia tourney

At the Farmersville Invitational two weeks ago, the Monarchs had a good tournament when they took second place to Immanuel. This past weekend in Visalia, EUHS experienced greatness.

Going undefeated in pool play on Friday, Sept. 24 and again on Saturday in bracket play, the Monarchs took the championship at the Visalia Tournament over Central Valley Christian.

The final game of the tournament ended with two straight victories for Exeter. The Monarchs took the Cavaliers 25-19 in the first match and 25-14 in the second giving Exeter its second victory over powerhouse CVC. The Championship win brought the Monarchs' tournament record to 18-2.

The Monarchs didn't stop at merely winning the tournament. Renee Barnett took home the All Tourney award while her teammate Tiffany Marinos earned the Tournament MVP.

Barnett succeded in hitting 60 kills and serving six aces through the weekend. She looked sharp on the defensive side of play as well managing to lead the team with 43 digs in seven games.

Marinos came through for the Monarch defense as well making nine blocks and an impressive 37 digs.

Mt. Whitney, Granite Hills, Kingsburg and Hanford all fell to Exeter in the opening day of the tournament.

The Monarch's managed to defeat every team in two games with the collaborative effort of Baille Hellwig's 34 kills and 19 blocks, Libby Hellwig's seven Aces and Amanda Morgan's 35 digs. Brittany Walker and Ana Aguilar's six aces a piece didn't hurt the team too much either.

The Monarchs went into the Visalia tournament with a 16-2 overall record.

Completing the week, the Monarchs opened league with three wins over Corcoran on Tuesday, Sept. 21. With 11 hits, Barnett led the team through the first victory over the Panthers. Marinos also had another good showing with seven kills, two blocks and seven digs. The Monarchs succesively beat the Panthers 25-10, 25-19 and 25-9.

Exeter found even more success when they brought down Dinuba in three games last Thursday. Baille Hellwig and Barnett both kept consistant. Each hit three aces and seven and eight kills in three games. The Monarchs went home victoriously with scores of 25-10, 25-6 and 25-9.

After a victorious week of opening ESL play, the Monarchs volleyball team prepares for another face off with Immanuel. The Eagles defeated Exeter in the Championship game at the Farmersville tournament two weeks ago. On Thursday, the Monarchs travel to Coalinga for another league match.

The Monarchs won't return home to play in their own gym until Tuesday, Oct. 5 when they host Lindsay. The freshman game begins at 4:30 p.m.

The JV squad heads to Visalia this weekend to participate in the JV tournament. The JV team also found wins in their opening week of ESL play. The little Monarchs defeated Corcoran in two matches 25-21 and 25-12. They followed with a two-game win over Dinuba as well going 25-7 and 25-20.

Offensive standouts include Brittany Medrino and Collie Souza. Jessica Davis leads the team in serving aces.
