Monarchs squeak into 20th place

The Monarchs took their girls cross country team as far as it could go this season.

The girls raced in the CIF State Cross Country Championship meet on Nov. 27 in Woodward Park and finished in 20th place amongst the state's top 23 Division IV teams in the state.

Ariel Wright out of Bishop O'Dowd took first place in the race with a quick 18:04 finish time. The junior beat out the second place runner by 16 seconds.

As for team scores, the team from San Lorenzo Valley finished with 70 points winning the D-4 State Championship.

With 484 points, the Monarchs finished just behind Templeton who siezed 19th place with 480 points. Moreau Catholic High School finished behind the Monarchs with 457 points to put them in 21st place.

Individually, Senior Abbey Cochran finished up her final season with a 64th place finish running the 3.1 mile course in 20:27.

Allison Gonzalez ended her first Monarch season in 72nd place in the state with a time of 20:38 just 11 seconds short of Cochran.

Next across the finish line for Exeter, senior Kelly Curtis took 113th place in 21:23.

Junior Rachel Mitchell finished her last race for the season in 22:54 to take 163rd place. Allysa Stone followed her in 171st place with a 3.1 mile time of 23:29.

Also running for the Monarchs, junior Sandra Pablo and freshman Arielle Middleton took 181st and 184th place with times of 25:25 and 26:12 in the 185 runner race.

The Monarchs sent one more runner to the State meet last saturday.

Junior Jordan Cavanagh qualified to run in the D-4 boys race after finishing in the top 20 at the Grand Masters Meet. Cavanagh finished the State race in 17:42 putting him in 108th place behind Edwin Flores from Paraclete. Flores beat Cavanagh out in the final sprint finishing in 17:41.

Cavanagh managed to tie with Piedmont's Nahoa Moya Smith.
