Monarchs take Zinkin Classic

Buchanan High School hosted the Zinkin Classic last Friday and Saturday where Exeter won first place in the small school's division.

The Exeter Wrestling Team used team balance to earn the title "Small School Champions" at the 48-team Buchanan Zinkin Wrestling Tournament.

"All of our kids scored and we got crucial pins," commented coach Golding.

All twelve wrestlers taken to the tournament won at least one match. 140-pound Dan Weatherly placed fourth.

Jason Timblin at 145 pounds placed fifth and 119 pound Ernesto Rameriz placed sixth.

The Monarchs scored 82 points, 2.5 points ahead of State Ranked private Bay Area institution De La Salle High School.

Before the tournament, the Monarchs opened their season with a dual match against Redwood High School.

Inspired by Jason Timblin's upset decision over State ranked Dan Righi, the Monarchs went on to roll over Redwood 68-6.

Will Hammerslagh at 112 pounds; Dan Weatherly, 140 pounds; Julien Arzola, 145 pounds; Clauce Gahart, 189; and Matt Carter scored second period falls.

Mike Powell scored a technical fall in the third period.

The JV team also took a win over the Rangers at 42-12.

Weighing 125 pounds, Cody Stewart scored a pin along with 130 pound Mario Ramos; Javier Avila at 160 pounds; Ricardo Villagomez, 215 pounds and Angel Manzo.
