Varsity Wrestlers Place 5th in Lemoore

Led by Daniel Weatherly's (140) 10-0 performance, the Monarch Wrestlers compiled a 7-3 record at the Lemoore Duals.

The Monarchs competed in nine of the 14 weight classes in Friday's competition, finishing the day with three wins and two losses.

"It's very difficult to make up the points we give to the opposition, but we wrestled tough and we always were working for the pin," said coach Justin Golding. "We won 67 percent of our matches and 47 percent of those wins were by pins." Individually, the Monarchs were led by Dan Weatherly (140) who won all 10 of his matches, six by pins. Ernesto Rameriz (119) lost one. Six of Rameriz's wins were by pins. Mike Powell (125) lost two. Powell had five pins all in the first period. Fernando Avila (103) won seven matches. Dimas Contreras (130) and Jason Timblin (145) both went 6-4. Freshman Joey (160) made his first varsity tournament an impressive one winning all five of his matches.

The Monarchs travel to Mt. Whitney on Wednesday the 15th. Match time is 5:45 p.m.

The Monarch grapplers competed in the Lemoore Frosh/Soph and the Farmersville Junior Varsity tournaments, placing third at both competitions. The Monarch team was made up of only Freshmen.

"Considering we were competing against sophomores and juniors, we did an excellent job," Golding said.

The grapplers wrestled eight dual meets. Cody Stewart (125), John Gahart (189), and Joey Avila (171) went undefeated. Mario Ramos (135) and Julien Arzola (140) lost only one match. Manuel Cota (275) went 5-3.

Gahart had led the team with 5 pins. Ramos scored the quickest pin in 15 seconds.
